Abstract
Albert Namatjira, the Aranda watercolorist, painted nearly two thousand pictures during his lifetime and founded a 'school' of artists among the western Aranda. This essay presents a biographical sketch of Namatjira and his works, and the various influences that brought his creative talents to a peak. Jones depicts Namatjira as an autonomous individual, who with ambition and a pragmatic approach to life, adapted to a new world that offered many new opportunities to those who were capable of claiming them. In addition to the data on Namatjira, this article also contains information on the Lutheran Mission at Hermannsburg, socio-cultural change in Aranda society, and brief notes on other Native artists and their works.
