The Aranda traditionally claim homeland in the central Australian desert in the Northern Territory of Australia; primarily near Hermannsburg, Alice Springs, and Santa Teresa. They are comprised of varied groups that are politically autonomous though loosely affiliated through related languages. Originally nomadic hunter-gatherers who moved seasonally between known camps and shelters, many of these sites have become permanent settlements under the pressures of Australian policies of assimilation. The Dreaming, oral storytelling, perpetuates their religious and cosmological relationship to the landscape and constitutes their mythology.
