AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is an excellent and detailed account of the Aranda. The study was based on years of personal observation by Sir Baldwin Spencer, a biologist who served for a time as Special Commissioner for Aborigines and Chief Protector in Australia, and Francis James Gillen, Special Magistrate and Sub-Protector of Aborigines at Alice Springs, the center of Aranda territory. Spencer and Gillen witnessed many ceremonies and participated in the daily life of the Natives over a period of several years before much acculturation had begun to take place. The authors stress the social organization, sacred objects and places, myths, anthropometry, dress, utensils, weapons, decorative art, ceremonial activities, and norms of social behavior.
