Changes in women's activities both inside and outside the home

Abstract
The author discusses changes in women's lives, work, and status over three periods in contemporary Turkey, 1920-1950, 1950-1970, and 1970-1980s. The author observes that in spite of economic and political changes in the country and region, women continue to identify with their families and work towards enhancing the status of the family. As men are caught up in making money and in many cases working outside their village, either in urban areas or abroad, women play an increasing role in maintaining the household and raising children. Recent economic downturn and increase in downward mobility has lessened the value of education as an avenue to social mobility and accentuated men's pursuit of money and women's efforts to hold up the family.
