Most of the population of Turkey are ethnic Turks. Turks are linked by their common history, language, and religion—Islam. The origins of the Turkish peoples are among the nomadic and pastoral peoples who lived east of the Eurasian steppes from the borders of China across Turkestan. The Seljuk Turks victory over the Byzantines in 1071 began the Turkish migration into Anatolia. Turkey became a Republic in 1923 and in 1982 a parliamentary form of government was instituted. Most of the population now lives in urban areas and the rest in one of the 36,000 rural villages in Turkey.
