Abstract
This is a report is based on Turkish studies and surveys, including Serim Timur's work "Family Structure in Turkey," which uses data from a 1969 national survey and Kâğıtçıbaşı's 1975 "Sex roles, value of children and fertility." It focuses on kinship and social relationships in urban squatter settlements (gecekondu). The author finds that wider kin ties are not necessarily eclipsed in the urban setting but replaced by artificial kin ties that help structure social interactions and facilitate economic exchanges.
