Duofocal family structure and an alternative model of husband-wife relationships

Abstract
This is a discussion of husband-wife relationships in Turkey. The author argues against an oversimplified evolutionary model of the family in which extended, segregated, and patriarchal structure gives way to a nuclear, joint, and egalitarian one. Rather spouses enter marriage with their own network of social relationships, which they continue to maintain. While the contemporary Turkish family is more egalitarian and nuclear, it remains segregated as husband and wife continue to operate in separate domains with regard to work and recreation. Only among elite families according to the author is there an effort to approximate the joint conjugal relationships of modern Western nuclear families with couples spending their leisure time together.
