The inhabitants of the Kashmir Valley of India are largely Muslim, but also include Hindus (Pandits) and Sikhs. Agriculture remains important in the economy, which has come to include significant industrial, government, and tourism sectors. Beyond the traditional village councils, political representatives are elected to the state assembly and national parliament. A long history of struggle for control of the valley, both from within along sectarian and partisan lines, and from without by imperial and state powers, continues to spark conflict.
