Abstract
This dissertation is a study of PAIPAI, or annual community religious festivals, in 'Prosperity Settlement', a pseudonymous portion of a LI on the edge of Taipei City. Gates shows how the PAIPAI and other traditional Taiwanese social forms function in adapting the economy and social and political organization of the settlement to the encroaching urban and complexities of urban life.
