Abstract
De Glopper provides here an interpretive analysis of Taiwanese business practices in the town of Lukang. The informal mechanisms of local economic exchange -- particularly with regard to wholesaling and retailing activity -- are related to fundamental notions of trust, kin relations, and to the town's position within the larger national economy.
