This source is a study of the physical and cultural causes of soil erosion in Jamaica. It includes information on the crops and farming techniques employed in a small community in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. The authors discuss farmers' attitudes toward erosion and toward government efforts to reduce it. They focus on attitudes and practices antithetical to soil conservation. Topics covered are the division of labor in farming and marketing, social groupings in the community, participation in party politics, marriage patterns, and reactions to government programs aimed at changing agricultural practices.
