Abstract
This work is a comparative study that investigates the dynamics of the population-resource system in Jamaica beginning in the nineteenth century. The author discusses the general demography of Jamaica, and gives specifics on four study areas in different parts of the island: Penlyne Castle in the eastern interior, Yardley Chase-Big Yard and Mitchell Town on the south coast, and Barrett Town on the northwest coast. Methods include geographic surveys, participant observation, and intensive field surveys. Data are collected and analyzed on household composition, land and resource utilization, demographic trends, rural economy, employment, housing, farming technology, fertility, and migration.
