This article is concerned with the distribution of villages and inter-village relations among the Nambiquara Indians of Brazil. It shows that traditional Nambiquara villages housed closely related agnates with a wide variety of duties and privileges to one another. The author argues against the use of concepts of 'tribe' and 'band' for understanding the dynamics of these duties and privileges among villagers.
