AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Drawing upon interviews with informants in Santa Cruz province, Argentina between 1963 and 1967, with reference to earlier written sources, Siffredi provides a brief overview of major themes and characters in Central Tehuelche (Aónik'enk) mythology. The portion of the fundamental mythical cycle recounting how the culture hero Elal obtained the Daughter of the Sun as a wife from her parents, the Sun and Moon--which supplies many concepts regarding celestial phenomena--is compared to versions from other Tehuelche subgroups and those of neighboring cultures. The possibility of the original existence of a lunar cult is considered in regard to supplications still offered to the full moon. In contrast, the maleficent spirit Máip, associated with darkness, shadow (including any two-dimensional projection like drawings and photographs), wind, bad luck , and perhaps even death (or, at least, a death-like state of existence), appears not to have been beseeched but, instead, induced fear and anxiety and was driven away.
