Using historical documents and the ethnographic record Fernández Garay begins by identifying regional subgroups and linguistic affiliation of the widely distributed and highly mobile Tehuelche, among which only vestiges remain of the Central-Southern Tehuelche (Aonek'enk) subgroup. The historical decline of Tehuelche language, culture and population is traced from first contact in 1520, through subsequent centuries of incursions by Auraucanians and European colonists, to the establishment of reservations after 1880. Since that time, a variety of social ills and pressures have led to near complete assimilation, making cultural revitalization all but impossible. Fernández Garay emplea recursos históricos e etnográficos para identificar grupos regionales tehuelche, entre los cuales sobreviven solamente vestigios del grupo meridional-austral (Aonek'enk). Se recuenta la historia del decaimiento de la lengua, cultura, y población tehuelche, desde el primero encuentro en el año 1520, por los siglos seguientes marcados por colonización mapuche (araucano) y europeo, hasta el establecimiento de reservas desde el año 1880. Después de ese fecha, una variedad de males sociales y fuerzas para asimilación han puesto fuera del alcance la regeneración de una cultura tehuelche auténtica.
