Abstract
This monograph is based on numerous primary sources published from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. The author has published several other articles and books about Indians of Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and is familiar with the peoples of the area through his residence there over a number of years. The cultures of the Mosquito and Sumu are presented here in a fairly well rounded survey, the two compared with each other and occasionally with other nearby peoples. Especially well treated are the history of contact with Europeans, warfare, subsistence, religious beliefs and practices, material culture, and funeral customs. Especially noteworthy are the author's comments on the works of earlier writers.
