Abstract
This is a study of the Anadyr-Chukchee reindeer economy and contains valuable information on the details of reindeer raising, such as slaughtering techniques, castration of male animals, sorting of the herd, grazing, and the diseases to which the reindeer are subject. The Chukchee calendar is outlined here, and the activities throughout the year in connection with reindeer raising are discussed. The seasonal migrations of the Chukchee to find pasturage and protection for their reindeer receive attention as well as the holidays which revolve around certain events in the reindeer-raising season. Incidental information is to be had also on the activities of the Chukchee women, fishing methods and diet of the Chukchee people, and the participation of the shamans in the various activities connected with reindeer-raising.
