This source was written by the head of a missionary expedition to the Samoyed of the Mezen District of Archangel Province. It provides geographical, historical, and religious data on the peoples living on the Kanin, Timan, and Bolshezemel tundras. In the first section, the author describes the geography of the region and outlines the subsistence activities and nomadic travels of the Samoyed who frequent the area. In the second section, he touches briefly on a number of topics including early migrations of the Samoyed, derivations of the name Samoyed, historical and contemporary (i.e., 19th Century) Russian administration of the Samoyed, and sanctions for various crimes. In addition, there is a more detailed discussion of Samoyed religion – their gods, idols, shamans, and moral precepts, - along with an account of missionary activities and the spread of Christianity. Veniaminov is a famous missionary ethnologist who also worked with the Aleut and Tlingit of Alaska.
