Abstract
This is the introduction to an annotated volume, 'Contemporary Kazaks: Cultural and Social Perspectives' (for additional chapters from the volume, see documents 13-17.) The author briefly reviews previous ethnographic research of the culture and region. He himself did field research among the Kazaks of China in the early 1980s.
