Abstract
This study of Russia’s political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions focuses on the immediate lead-up and aftermath to the breakup of the Soviet Union in order to better understand the difficulties faced by its new political leaders in democratizing and westernizing the economy and state structures, including the army. Russia’s evolving relations with neighboring states that splintered away from the former USSR are also considered.
