Abstract
Combining data from official government reports and village-level ethnographic studies, this document describes continuities and changes in Russian culture and society that had experienced land redistribution, collectivization, industrialization, and an expansion of educational and health services under Soviet rule. The communist regime also sought to control the family and the church by interfering in their traditional roles, such as socializing children and providing moral guidance. The government was highly successful in modernizing the economy, expanding social services, and improving communication, but not in replacing traditional religious and family values with communist ideals.
