Pukapukans are the inhabitants of the Pukapuka Atoll in the Cook Islands. Culturally they are Polynesians. Permanent settlement is allowed only on one of the islands, Pukapukans use the other islets, including also Nassau Island, as transient camps particularly during copra season (an important resource for external trade). Geographic location is not tied to social membership, and land tenure operates on a double system; one based on village membership and one based on genealogy. Traditional subsistence relied on fishing and taro cultivation.
