Abstract
This book is a detailed description and technological analysis of the material culture of the Hawaiian Islands from approximately the eighteenth century to the early 1950s. The information presented here is based on the published literature on Polynesia and the Hawaiian Islands, combined with data from the analysis of artifacts from the Bishop and other museums. These museum collections were largely made by early explorers before Hawaiian culture was greatly changed by European contact. The document is heavily annotated with photographs and figures illustrating the descriptive information in the text. Data on other aspects of Hawaiian culture, such as social and political organization, other than the superficial mention of chiefs and kings, are markedly absent in the document.
