This article is a research proposal for a study of gender concepts, roles, and relations in Tonga. In the article, James reviews the historical and ethnographic sources and discussions regarding KAINGA, FAMILI, FAHU, property rights, fosterage, bureaucracy, professional occupations, and male effeminacy.
