A rejoinder to Edmund Leach

interpretation of ritual: essays in honour of A. I. Richards[london]Published In 1972 • Pages: 277-282

By: Bott, Elizabeth.

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This source is a critique of Leach's evaluation of Bott's analysis of the Tongan kava ceremony (documents 82: Leach and 81:Bott), with which Bott is in substantial disagreement, though she points out his structuralist methodology is no more falsifiable or objective than is her psychoanalytical approach. She also discusses structuralist analysis and compares it to functional and psychoanalytic interpretations.
