Land shortage and population in Tonga

By: Maude, Alaric Mervyn.
Abstract
This article is an analysis of the extent to which Tonga's rapidly growing population has affected the agricultural system. As background to the analysis, the author presents data on population density and growth, the land tenure system, and the agricultural systems. He concludes that population pressure has affected some changes in the subsistence agricultural system but has not led to major stress within that system. In contrast, he sees far more changes in agriculture occurring where population pressure is combined with commercial cropping.
