Folklore as expressed in the dance in Tonga

Folk-Lore80 • Published In 1967 • Pages: 160-168

By: Kaeppler, Adrienne Lois.

Abstract
Kaeppler's article deals with the form and meaning of the LAKALAKA, a Tongan artistic performance that combines dance and poetry. The author states that Tongan poetry is replete with allusions, symbolism, and metaphors. To demonstrate her point she presents a text and an analysis of its multiple meanings, based on information supplied by Tongan poets and performers. She concludes that the purpose behind the LAKALAKA is 'to pay allegiance to the established social order of Tongan society' (p. 167).
