Abstract
This article deals with the complex system of rank operative in Tonga. The author distinguishes between the ranking system within the KāINGA (kindred) and the society-wide ranking system of the HA'A (lineages). She delineats the principles by which people are ranked and shows how the two systems interrelate. She concludes that Tongan society is internally stratified, highly conscious of ranking, and integrated by the ranking system.
