Abstract
This source is the journal of the surgeon aboard the RESOLUTION, one of the ships of Captain James Cook. The journal covers approximately two months in 1777 spent at Tonga, principally at the islands of Tongatapu, Nomuka, and Eua. Anderson seems to have been a very careful and accurate observer. In addition to the accounts of daily activities, there are quite detailed observations on a number of topics, such as geography, flora, fauna, physical anthropology, diseases, dress, domestic life, architecture, canoes, material culture, food, relationships between the sexes, funeral customs, religion, political structure, international relations, and language.
