Sickness, ghosts and medicine in Tonga
journal of the Polynesian Society • 32 • Published In 1923 • Pages: 136-142
By: Collocott, E. E. V. (Ernest Edgar Vyvyan).
Abstract
This short article is a discussion of Tongan concepts of sickness. It is by a missionary of long residence among the Tongans (p. 142) and contains information on theories of disease, the relation of ghosts to disease causation, diagnosis, treatment (usually massage and/or herbal medicines), and medical practitioners. It is not a detailed study, and ignores some relevant areas such as sorcery. Collocott's skeptical attitude reflected in his writing, as well as his role as a missionary, may have affected what and how much people were willing to tell him.
