By: Hornell, James.
Abstract
This source is a brief, illustrated description of the canoes of Tonga, both today and in the past. Hornell describes small outrigger canoes, large ocean-going voyaging canoes, and the large double canoes with their complex rigging, and broad decks. The descriptions include quotations and illustrations from Cook and other early explorers. Hornell compares the Tongan vessels to those of Samoa and Fiji, and emphasizes the strong influence of the Fijians on Tongan boat building after the late eighteenth century.
