Chapter 12
history of Melanesian society, , by W. H. R. Rivers • 1 • Published In 1914 • Pages: 298-362
By: Rivers, W. H. R..
Abstract
This chapter consists of two brief ethnographic sketches of Tikopia. Rivers, the first anthropologist to visit the island, spent only one day there. The first part of this chapter is based on Rivers' work with an informant, John Maresere. The second part of the sketch is based on material sent to the author by the Reverend W.J. Durrad, a missionary who spent several weeks in Tikopia some weeks after Rivers' visit. In a letter (February 10, 1956) to the Human Relations Area Files, Firth expressed lack of confidence in Rivers' data. For further comment by Firth on Rivers' work see 2: Firth, pp. xxiii-xxiv, category 114.
