Abstract
This is a complete and detailed analysis of the economic system in Tikopia. Principles of land ownership, rules for gift-giving on ceremonial occasions and in payment for work, and kinship obligations governing mutual aid are discussed in detail. Since the Tikopia have no system of price, value, etc., corresponding to our economic concepts of them, and no competitive barganing, their economic principles are those which best serve ritual and kinship obligations. The role of the chiefs in productive and ritual activities is given full attention, and principles of distribution, payment, and accumulation of goods are well covered.
