Abstract
Kittlitz accompanied Admiral Lutke in 1827-28 on his expedition to the Bering Sea, Kamchatka, and Micronesia as a naturalist. He contributed Observations Zoologiques to vol. III of Lutke's report. In publishing his own work he states that its purpose is quite different from Lutke's since it represents the interest and observations of a botanist and zoologist. He was able to supplement his material with information from the field notes of Dr. Mertens who had died earlier. Pages 1-190 which have been incorporated in the files deal with observations made during the trip through the Eastern Carolines, to Guam, back to the Western Carolines, and thence up through the Bonins. His observations are mainly on the flora and fauna of the islands visited, but he also includes comments on the inhabitants encountered, giving superficial details on their material culture and some customs.
