The Central Carolines: part I: the Lamotrek Group, Woleai

Friederichsen, De Gruyter und Co.10 (1)Published In 1937 • Pages: 1-291

By: Krämer, Augustin.

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
The material obtained by the 1908-10 Hamburg Südsee-Expedition to the West Central Carolines, under Krámer, was not written up for 26 years, and was not published until 1937. Probably for this reason, a number of abbreviations and remarks in the text are not clear. This volume has three parts: 1) the Lamotrek Group, in which Krámer includes Elato and Olimarao; 2) the Woleai Group; 3) the Fais Group. In the case of the first section, the material has all been filed under Lamotrek except where there are specific references to Elato. There were almost no specific references to Olimarao. In connection with the Woleai group, Krámer describes the typhoon of 1907 with its far-reaching effects, both as far as human life and the topography of the islands are concerned. In conclusion, there is a brief summary of cultural comparisons for the three groups.
