Abstract
The log of the expedition ship 'Peiho' is written by Hellwig, who also collected ethnographic specimens through trade with the natives; much of the narration is concerned with his trading experiences. Many observations were not made personally by Hellwig, but reflect the work of the other researchers, who occasionally left the expedition to investigate local cultures. The Micronesian phase of the trip, which began in Palau and extended throughout the Carolines to and including the Marshalls, was initiated in August 1909 and ended in April 1910. That part of the log which has been selectively translated and abstracted describes, for the most part, native culture, especially where contact with Europeans has occurred. The data, although duplicated, in part, in the formal ethnographic reports of the expedition, are more personal and more specific for locality in the log. A 3-page petrographic summary by Herzenberg details the general data on the geology and mineralogy of Palau and the Carolines.
