Abstract
This study examines the influence of Chuuk gender roles on child-rearing practices and personality development. Fischer provides a good, basic description of Chuuk geography, history, economy and social roles. She discusses in more detail child-bearing, child-rearing, and the role of motherhood, which according to Fischer is the only acceptable role for women in Chuuk society. Children are cared for by all members of an extended patrilineal family group and are often adopted out to relatives after weaning. The close relationship mothers cultivate with some of their sons is in part to insure that her sons will care for her later in her old age. The appendix includes an obervation of a mother and baby in their home.
