Abstract
This monograph on native astronomy is one of the classics in the field of ethnology. Although Goodenough did field work in Chuuk, nearly all the data for this article have come from published sources. The mongraph presents general data on the astronomical knowledge of the people of the central Carolines, and its application to the native calendar and to navigation. here is also a great deal of information on the sidereal compass, the astronomical orientation of the population, the manner in which astronomical phenomena are correlated with the native calendar and almanac, and the problem of the origination of this knowledge.
