Abstract
This monograph is based primarily on seven months of field work that Gladwin undertook on the island of Romonum in the Chuuk group in 1947, and is supplemented by information obtained from other members of the Yale University team on Chuuk who were participating in the Coordinated Investigation of Micronesian Anthropology. The monograph is divided into two major divisions, the first of which presents data on the general ethnographic background of Chuuk, listed under the chapter headings of "The Setting, The People Today, The Baby, The Child, Youth, Lovers, Marriage, The Trukese Adult, Death," and an example of Chuukese case history as illustrated by a woman called Eleanor. The second division of this work gives psychological data on the description and development of the Chuukese personality, and the technique used by the authors in their analyses (e. g. use of the Rorschach and the Thematic Apperception Tests). Twenty-three case histories are then presented (twelve men and eleven women) along with the final analysis of each personality on the basis of the results obtained from their performances on the Rorschach and the T.A.T. tests. The actual "raw" data obtained from these tests will be found in appendices A and B of this monograph. All test interpretations given in this work were done by Dr. Sarason, a psychologist, and these coupled with the ethnographic data gathered primarily by Gladwin, served as the basis of the latter's Ph.D. thesis submitted to Yale University.
