Abstract
This work describes the impact of radio, newspapers, and cinema on Kiribati culture and society. On the positive side, their popularity, especially radio and newspapers, has enabled government agencies and civic groups to disseminate information on a range of cultural themes, including legends, biographies, manners, and economically useful skills. On the negative side, the popularity of foreign music and cinema among youth is threatening the continuity of traditional Kiribati music, games and language. The author advocates regulating the media for both content and language use. For maps, glossary, and bibliography see Mason (1985).
