Abstract
This article consists of two parts. The first is a general survey of the Vanuatu and Banks Islands. The author points out the cultural complexity of the area, and shows that there is a wide range of variation in the distribution of various culture elements. On the basis of these facts, he cautions against making broad generalizations about the area until more is known. The second portion of the article consists of a short description of the changes which have taken place on the island of Atchin, and is complementary to the earlier description given by Layard (see 1: Layard and 2: Layard, this file) in that it updates (to ca. 1934-35) certain features of native life.
