Abstract
This is a comprehensive ethnographic study of the Kurtatchi community on the northeastern coast of Bougainville, and of the peoples of the Buka Passage in general. Because the original research design focused on issues of sex, there is notable detail regarding marriage and sex, pregnancy and childbirth, childhood and adolescent activities, and puberty rites. There are also descriptions of the physical environment, village and kinship organization, economic pursuits, arts and crafts, food, medicine, religious beliefs and practices. There is even a collection of dreams, with classification and discussion. Appendices include lists of kinship terms, and of useful plants.
