Systems of areal integration: some considerations based on the Admiralty Islands of northern Melanesia

Abstract
In this paper, Schwartz examines the degree of regional (he uses the term 'areal') integration of groups occupying Manus Province (formerly the Admiralty Islands.) He argues that the entire archipelago constitutes a single 'areal' culture, which connects the Manus, Usiai, and Matankor ethnic groups. He discusses in detail how these groups were linked by trade and a system of ceremonial exchanges, and also warfare.
