Trobriand territorial categories and the problem of who is not in the kula

Abstract
Previous publications on the Trobriands have treated territorial classification systems as if they were all on the same order. In this paper, Leach proposes to break this unified classification down into five separate systems that he refers to as 'supra-local territorial categories'. These systems relate to territorial classification by topographical separation, coastal-island orientation, economic condition, warfare, and rank and Kula participation. Leach also examines why many Kiriwinan men are not active in Kula.
