Abstract
This monograph is an attempt at a thorough study of the religious beliefs of the Wogeo, with the objective of inspiring further research of this kind in Melanesia. Topics covered include heroes and mythology, spirits and their associated ceremonies, concepts of pollution, initiation rituals, supernatural causes of illness and death, the use of magic and sorcery, and the interrelationships of religious beliefs with social structure and ethics. The author lived in the village of Dap in the Wonevaro district, becoming so identified with the area that he had to abandon his plan of living in several different villages. In spite of his apparent close involvement with the community, he frequently emphasizes the irrationality of Wogeo religious beliefs.
