Women and modern marriage among the Orokaivans

Canberra anthropology12 (1-2) • Published In 1989 • Pages: 28-47

By: Newton, Janice.

Abstract
In this paper Newton argues that urbanization, migration and mobility have decreased the autonomy of married women and increased the vulnerability of particular categories of marriage. The first part of the paper describes the mechanisms contributing to this vulnerability, while the second part discusses the economic implications of brideprice on the autonomy of women in marriage (p. 28).
