Abstract
This source examines 'exchange cycles' among the Mountain Orokaiva. An 'exchange cycle' as defined within includes three pairs of elements: (a) the basic elements placed in opposition; (b) the objects of exchange entering the transaction on each side; (c) the mediating objects or acts that may be interposed as a prestation move from one exchange partner to the other. Models of exchange cycles, which the author develops 'on the basis of his understanding of indigenous thought patterns,' are then used in an attempt to explain various social institutions among the Orokaiva.
