This article identifies and discusses linkages between sexual division of labor and local knowledge of the pysical enviroment among the Tiwi of northern Australia. It shows how this connection is reproduced from generation to generation as invidual men and women participated in a series of rituals relating to the production and consumption of a somewhat 'toxic' variety of yam called kulama.
