Abstract
This document is essentially a study of Tiwi social organization as seen first from the standpoint of the local groups and secondly from that of the 'matrilineal totemic clans.' In his discussion of the hordes the author describes the boundaries and territorial rights of the groups, the variations in terminology used to refer to themselves, the transmission of property rights to other members of the group, and to a lesser extent, male and female status in the horde. This paper embodies some of the results of the research carried out by the author during the time he served as a Science Research Scholar of the University of Sydney.
