AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
The Tobelo tie illness to elements of traditional religion, believing one’s health depends on properly performing periodic sacrifices to the ancestors and other regular rituals. Illness is regarded as the result of an imbalance in the exchange between the living and the dead, so the main aim of Tobelo healing practices is to restore the relationship by following prescribed rituals. The author addresses the implications for an expansion of modern Western biomedical services.
